Aleah Washington is a textiles artist creating utilitarian items that are decorative and represent the impact of redlined communities. Formal quilted patterns relate to the home space while textures and color schemes represent the surrounding environment. Keen with identity, the work presents moments of vulnerability as different sourced fabrics are revamped focusing on unity and different histories/backgrounds. The meaning of home is expressed through mixing disregarded curtains, nonfunctional clothing items and other age home fabrics that are intentionally separated. The psychological effect of time and division are represented through the use of improvisational piecing methods.
